چکیده

Acknowledgements I am grateful to Prof. Dr. Christoph von der Malsburg for his guidance and support. He offered me the opportunity to start my research in the challenging field of computer vision and taught me to ask the question " How does the brain work? ". His passion on this topic inspired me and the present work. Further I would like to thank Prof. Dr. Andreas Wieck for his interest in being my second reviewer. Special thanks go to Dr. Rolf P. Würtz for many discussions, his advice and support during my research and the generation of this thesis. The life at the institute has been so much easier with the help of Uta Schwalm and Anke Bücher. Thank you for the administrative support. Acknowledgements are also made to Michael Neef for providing the IT infrastructure. For their patient help whenever I struggled with L A T E X or C++ problems I would like to thank Günter Westphal and Manuel Günter. I am also grateful to Marco Müller who helped me finding faces and Andreas Tewes for endless discussions on scientific or non-scientific matters. I am glad to have friends like Thorsten Prüstel and Bianca von Scheidt who accompanied and supported me from my first academic day on. My father Dietmar and my mother Margaretha, my brother Christian and his family for all the nice moments and for showing me the strength of a family. Words cannot express what you mean to me, my wife Seza and our son David.

Human Computer Interaction Using Vision-Based Hand Gesture Recognition

With the rapid emergence of 3D applications and virtual environments in computer systems; the need for a new type of interaction device arises. This is because the traditional devices such as mouse, keyboard, and joystick become inefficient and cumbersome within these virtual environments. In other words, evolution of user interfaces shapes the change in the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). In...

3D Hand Motion Evaluation Using HMM

Gesture and motion recognition are needed for a variety of applications. The use of human hand motions as a natural interface tool has motivated researchers to conduct research in the modeling, analysis and recognition of various hand movements. In particular, human-computer intelligent interaction has been a focus of research in vision-based gesture recognition. In this work, we introduce a 3-...

Neural Network Performance Analysis for Real Time Hand Gesture Tracking Based on Hu Moment and Hybrid Features

This paper presents a comparison study between the multilayer perceptron (MLP) and radial basis function (RBF) neural networks with supervised learning and back propagation algorithm to track hand gestures. Both networks have two output classes which are hand and face. Skin is detected by a regional based algorithm in the image, and then networks are applied on video sequences frame by frame in...

3D hand tracking using Kalman filter in depth space

Hand gestures are an important type of natural language used in many research areas such as human-computer interaction and computer vision. Hand gestures recognition requires the prior determination of the hand position through detection and tracking. One of the most efficient strategies for hand tracking is to use 2D visual information such as color and shape. However, visual-sensor-based hand...

Applying mean shift and motion detection approaches to hand tracking in sign language

Hand gesture recognition is very important to communicate in sign language. In this paper, an effective object tracking and hand gesture recognition method is proposed. This method is combination of two well-known approaches, the mean shift and the motion detection algorithm. The mean shift algorithm can track objects based on the color, then when hand passes the face occlusion happens. Several...
